Christ’s Present Session: Prophet, Priest, and King
1. Christ as Prophet (First Coming)
Role: During Christ’s earthly ministry, He fulfilled the office of Prophet by proclaiming God’s message directly to humanity. This is highlighted in passages like Matthew 4:17, where Jesus began His public ministry by preaching repentance and the coming of the kingdom.
Present Session: While His prophetic office was most visible during His first coming, the truths He revealed continue to speak to the Church and the world today through Scripture and the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit.
2. Christ as Priest (Present Session)
Role: Christ’s priestly ministry is a central focus of His present session in heaven. According to Hebrews 4:15 and related passages, He serves as the believer’s High Priest, interceding on behalf of His people, advocating for them, and providing ongoing access to God,
Sustaining creation (Colossians 1:16–17), etc.
Keeping and interceding for the saints (John 10:27–29; Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25)
Serving as the Head and Groom of the Church (Ephesians 1:22–23; 5:22–33)
Advocating for believers (Hebrews 9:24; 1 John 2:1)
Building the Church (Matthew 16:18; Acts 2:41; 4:4)
Restoring fellowship and disciplining His children (1 John 1:9; Hebrews 12:5–13)
Bestowing spiritual gifts (Ephesians 4:7–12)
Fulfilling the Melchizedekian High Priestly role (Hebrews 6:20)
Indwelling His people (John 14:23)1.
3. Christ as King (Second Coming)
Role: Christ is the promised King who will one day rule visibly over all creation (Isaiah 9:6–7; Matthew 25:31).
Christ’s session (His present ministry in heaven) is foundational for Christian assurance, spiritual growth, and the Church’s mission. It means Christ is not passive but actively engaged in sustaining, interceding, and reigning for the benefit of His people.
Neglect of this doctrine can lead to a diminished understanding of Christ’s ongoing work and the privileges believers enjoy now.
